Stressed?

There is a popular belief that stress can be eliminated by putting the stress-inducing problem out of our mind; that we can utilize certain techniques that distract our thinking from our current anxieties, and that once the problem is ‘out of mind’ it can be forgotten.

     But the fact of the matter is that such action (or inaction) does not work.   What it does is give the illusion that the stress has been eliminated when, in actuality, the stress has been ‘deferred’ until a later date.   Not only that, when it comes back again it is likely to be even more severe.

    Stressed?  Then a few beers at the club after work; a hard game of squash; listening to relaxing music; sexual release; jogging; Tai Chi’ the leisurely swim; these things temporarily relieve stress.   And that’s good.   The immediacy, the urgency, the presence of the problem is ameliorated.   But the stressful problem is not solved.  

     What actually happens is that the problem does not go away.   It sinks into the subconscious mind.   It does not cure itself.   It does not go into nothingness.    It actually continues to grow and to built itself, unmonitored by our awareness, only to manifest itself as an even stronger, more unpleasant emotional problem at a future date.

     Also incorrectly believed is that our problem is the cause of our stress; that it is the situation itself which creates the feeling or emotion we find so unpleasant.  Things happen outside of us over which we have inadequate control or no control, and we find that very difficult to live with.

What’s causing the stress?

     But is it an ‘outside of ourselves’ situation which really causing the emotion, thus causing the stress?

     If we ponder this, and are honest with ourselves, we eventually realize (at the intellectual level, even though we are still incapable of accepting it at the emotional level) that the problem is not external to us.  We may rationalize that it is, but, actually, the problem lies within.

     It is inside us.   It is not outside at all.  What is outside is simply the stiumlus, the trigger.   The emotion,which is the direct reaction to our thinking on a particular problem, lies within our own psyche.   The agony is internal.   It is our emotion which is hurting us, causing the pain and anguish.   Or, more specifically, it is our automatic reaction at the mental emotional level which is causing the stress.

     How can we overcome stress?   Changing the outside circumstances might temporarily alleviate it.  But soon another problem will arise to take its place.   Life appears to be an ongoing project of overcoming problems of one sort or another.

     In overcoming problems we have to pick, in many instances, the lesser of two evils.  If we pick according to what we believe in our hearts to be right, then the decision will rarely come back as a stress problem.  But if we don’t, if we push it below,sweep it under the proverbial carpet, we add to the stockpile of subconscious stress we already possess.

     But how to get rid of the stockpile of stress held within us?   For nearly all of us are filled with neuroses and phobias and hang-ups of one sort or another.   How can we get rid of these?

     We can’t change the outside world so that we have no more problems.  That is impossible.   It wouldn’t matter if we had the power of a national president or an emporor, or the genius of Leonardo de Vinci or Albert Einstein.   All we can do is change with world within us.

     And change the world within us we can.  Ways have been found.  And as far as the alleviation of stress is concerned, there is an excellent way.    It is called Vipassana Meditation.    You probably won’t find the word in an English Language Dictionary.   No matter.  It is a technique which goes right to the heart of the matter.   Practising it, dilegently, regularly, persistently and patiently will gradually, oh, so gradually, release from the traumas, hangups, fears – along with all of its stress.

Happiness and Work

Work and Happiness

If you were to ask the question, “What do you really want out of life,” most people would answer, “Happiness.”   

            Unfortunately, “happiness” is a bit like love.   It can’t be bought.   It can be argued that true love can be bought in a pet shop.   It comes inbuilt with the puppy or kitten you purchase.  But happiness cannot be bought at all.    You see, it is a by-product.

            Yet it  is so important to us.

We need to have a worthwhile Ideal

What is this thing we long for but cannot define?   How does it fit in with our attitudes towards our work, our career?   We feel it does have something to do with success.  But before we can venture further, it might be in our interests to define what success is.  And the best definition I’ve heard to date is that “Happiness is the progressive realization of a worthwhile ideal.”   I guess the author meant: Happiness results from or out of the progressive realization of such.

           All right so how does this relate to work?   We talking happiness and work here, aren’t we?   

          We are.   But let’s get back to our ideal. 

           So we have to have within us what we regard as a worthwhile ideal.

            Fortunately, we have many: being a good husband, wife, father, mother, son, daughter, friend;  undertaking successfully a personal project such as painting the kitchen, planting a tree, or obtaining a desired job; or doing something we consider really worthwhile for our group, our club, our community, city or nation.   These last get progressively difficult as our dreams expand in grandeur.

            On the larger scale, our dreams can be fraught with frustration.  And rightly so.  For what we deem to be worthwhile might not be worthwhile at all.  ‘ The road to hell is paved with good intentions,’ goes the saying.

            But there is one area easily accessible to most of us that is both worthwhile and can bring that elusive phenomenon known as happiness.  And that is providing good service.  By giving of our best, cheerfully, willingly-  and remaining unattached to the outcome.   We can do this most easily through our work; our gainful employment.

            Remaining unattached to the outcome is important.   If we purposely seek reward for our good deed or good service then the chances are that feelings of happiness will be ameliorated by our thoughts of reward – and our increasing bitterness when our efforts are overlooked, or criticized.

            But if we work cheerfully, conscientiously, to the best of our capacity at the time, free of self-criticism (and perhaps ignore the criticism of others) then all sorts of things start to happen.   We get better at our work.  We like it more.   We get lost in our occupation and the time flies.   And we are not only obtaining success but also find, when we look back on the minutes or hours spent, that we were happy after all.    So work can be a tool to happiness.  It’s certainly worth giving it a try…don’t you think?

Email to a fellow writer

No, no need to go to those lengths.   Re-writing the whole thing  isn’t necessary.   It’s just that you refer to “Mind” as the be all and end all.  

          This isn’t the case.    Our mind is a tool of the Real Us   We are the Observer, the Witness, the Higher Self, call it what you may.   This Observer is the part of us that never changes.   Our body, our emotions, our mind (contents, beliefs, etc) are of us but not us.

          When you look out through non-judgemental, non-labelling, non-discrimminating eyes, whether you’re two years old or one-hundred and two, You see the world.  You see it without interpretation.  Mind does the interpretation.   

          A major part of You (the Real or Higher Self) is also the decision-maker, the Will of the Higher Self, as distinct from the will of the little self or ego or conditioned self.

          I think you need to include a glossary of terms.   And when you compile it, be very careful how you interpret the word “Mind” for your readers.    The will of the ‘conditioned mind’ is the will of the ego.   The Will of the Higher Self (Nature, Life, God – once again call it what you want) is the Will of the Real Self.   The Will of our Higher Self is in alignment -because it is part of, or so I believe-  Universal Will.   Our Higher Will and our Higher Self are part of God.

          This Higher Part of us can be likened to one infinitely small spark of The All.   It could be likened to one water molecule in an infinite ocean.   But it is the same as the rest of that ocean.  And this ocean is all that is: an Infinite Creator and Witness to Its own creations.    The creations are illusory as far as this part of us is concerned: they arise, stay for a while, and pass away.

          Anyway, I hope this is of some help.

Joy and Happiness

We can get more joy and happiness out of our lives by harnessing our power of creativity.   The more creative we are, the more of a person we become: continuing to grow; feeling more alive; becoming charged with enthusiasm and leading a more meaningful and fulfilling life.   Creative effort is an antidote to worry.   Worry is essentially the wrongful use of our imagination.

Creative people love what they do.   It it not the hope of achieving fame or amassing wealth that drives them; rather, it is the opportunity to do the things they love most.   They feel an inner glow that exudes a sense of happiness.

We are most creative during our childhood days.   This stage is also our happiest.  Studies have shown that on the average the little child laughs about 400 times a day whereas the average adult laughs only 15 times a day. 

Capitalizing on creativity promotes a positive outlook and sense of well-being that boosts the immune system.   It keeps us healthy.   And a healthy person is a happier person.

According to a Reuter’s report, creative people tend to lead a more active sex life, which researchers said was no coincidence.   Their creativity seems to act like a sexual magnet.   A good example is the famous artist, Pablo Picasso…

Ghost Guidance & Automatic Writing by Arthur Thomas Ware.

Chapter One

We might as well admit it.   We all have a fascination with death.   Most of us are afraid of it.   Some of us are terrified.   But, like an intrusive television advertisement, the subject keeps coming up.   It wont go away.  Permanently, anyway.   We suddenly become aware that many of the significant people who were once part of our life are no longer with us.    And this even applies to the not so significant.   Our favourite film and pop stars-  gone.   The sporting heroes we admired so much in our teens – gone.   They died.   Dying is what happens to someone else.  “No point in worrying,” we say.   “I’m okay.”   Yet deep down, we know our turn will come.    No one gets out of this life alive –  no one!

     “Or do they?”    And just as importantly, “Do I?”

     Artists, particularly writers and poets, write of little but Death; Death and Love.   Yes, these two are their forte’.   It is their bread and butter.   Love – usually meaning sex (especially if the artist is under fifty or so) and death when escape from the pressures of living can no longer be readily found in the former.   Yes, we feel we just have to know more about Death.   This is why our book shops are filled  with volumes on Mysticism, Meditation, the Meaning of Life.    This is why the best-sellers today are publications about the Spirit, the Soul, and the Real Self.   You see, what we really want is an assurance about survival.

     Many people purport to know a lot about the subject of Death – yet really know nothing.   You’ll find quite a lot of them up in pulpits on a Sunday.   I’m not saying they don’t have faith.   But there is a helluva difference between faith and knowing.   And people want to know.    Knowing is certainty.

Finger in the Stream – Conversations with a Higher Self, by Arthur Thomas Ware.

Chapter One

The reader will be far more concerned with what Higher Self (the ‘God part’ of us all) has to say than the writer’s personal story so I will dispense with that.    Automatic Writing is a common enough ‘psychic’ ability.   What differentiates one recipient from another is the quality of the writings – the content.    So I will simply preface each segment of these writings with the date on which I received them.

     To begin

     Thank you, God, for enabling ‘Conversations with God’ to come into my possession.   It is the most significant book I think I have ever read-  and I’ve read some good ones.    What makes it so authentic is that I, too, am able to take Automatic Writing.     And as you know – but this is for the reader – I have been doing so for around forty years.

     I contact you wondering if you have anything at all you would like to say to me, for I love to hear from you.

Automatic Writing -Response

Don’t worry about how I sound.   Everything I say does not have to be profound truths, does it?   I love you, too.   In fact I am love.    I am the love and joy which holds the whole universe together.   I am the universe and the joy.    But you have already comprehended this and that is as I wanted it to be for you.

     Your desire in obtaining more freedom by becoming more able to influence your material world is not one which I would subscribe to.   Your main work is to produce laughter and affection in others.   I am merely observing what you have been asking for yourself.   You can change all that at any time.  That is your prerogative.   But what you are after is advice, ongoing advice.

     You have it in your power to become whatever you want, and to do whatever you want to do.   You know this theoretically but do not as yet believe it in your heart.   Mind tells you that this is not possible.   Only a fragment of comprehension – which will grow, incidentally – knows it deeply enough for you to work on.

     Do not correct for grammar here.      Let it flow.

     You are able to communicate a wealth of feeling and a wealth of wisdom but you do not need to create the circumstances in which you are able to do this.   –   You’re not going to record this for posterity, are you?    You might?

     All right.   Where to begin?…

Where are you – Me? Experiences in Vipassana Meditation, by Arthur Thomas Ware.

Introduction

If you logged onto this site because of its title, then you’re the reader I’m writing for.   You want to know more about yourself.   You desire to know the “real” you.    You are what I’d call a “searcher,”    Moreover, you’ve probably thought, possibly with some exasperation, “I’m ….. years into my life and I still haven’t got a clue what it’s about or where it’s leading.”    The seeming futility of being born, just to die, might be causing you a certain despondency.   ” What’s the point of it all?” you might be asking.    If these aspects of life concern you, then read on.

     The question “Where Are You –  Me?” depicts the main theme of these writings.   It is a description of the search by the author to find out where the essential quintessence of “me” lies.   

     Equally important: what  this “me” is.    It describes the search, findings, and philosophies which have evolved from these findings.   It does not purport to be the Whole Truth.     But it is my Truth, the author’s views at the time of writing.    That these views will change as more Truth is revealed to me is very likely.   Nothing is static.   However, the results of these findings, even at this relatively undeveloped stage, coupled with the views I express here, should be of interest to the many.    For what is authenticated by me can be authenticated by you.   The results are applicable to everyone.

     In the opening chapters I endeavour to describe that dimension into which we plunge when we successfully undertake “Self Discovery.”   For the want of a label I have called this, “The Fifth Dimension.”   Briefly, I’m describing how we are all made up of a space-time dimension other than the physical; a dimension which takes into account that amorphous concept we refer to as our Mind.   Some of the concepts are difficult to comprehend.   But if the reader stays with me he, or she will, I expect, eventually make sense of it all.

Divine Dialogue – How to Record and Conversation with God, by Arthur Thomas Ware.

Synopsis

‘Divine Dialogue’  is an instructional book or ‘how to do it’  type book designed to introduce the reader to Automatic Writing.   By its reading, and by the practices it advocates, the reader is enabled to use this technique for his or her own spiritual development.

The book comprises a series of recorded conversations between Arthur Thomas Ware, the author’s ‘little self’  (referred to as the ego in psychological literature) and ‘Higher Self,’ that part of us which is closest to God.

A great many books have been ‘dictated’ to authors via the phenomenon known as Automatic Writing.   The most recent of these have been the best-selling series, Conversations with God, Books 1, 2, and 3, Friendship with God, and Communion with God, by Neale Donald Walsch of the USA.   Walch took his first automatic communication in 1993.   This writer’s been at it since 1968.

Divine Dialogue is the result of forty years of practice.  During this time the author has taken down far more than a million words by this method.   This book deals with his experiences in how to master the technique.    Advice is given on what to do and, of equal importance, what not to do.   And this advice comes not only from the author’s ‘little self’ but from that part of him purporting to be God.

The work is quite short:   A one page introduction, fourteen chapters, and 36,000 words.

Chapter One – Going Within.

Want to come on a fantastic voyage? Want to journey into the heart of your own self? Want to truly comprehend your own being with greater understanding than you ever have before? Then come aboard. Sail with me as we explore these internal worlds within our own selves. It’ll be a trip you’re likely to remember – always.

     Forty-two years ago, in 1968, this old ex-sailor embarked on an ‘internal’ voyage.   I didn’t sail out over the sea.   I went below it.   Like a nuclear submarine, I dived deep, going below the surface of normal, everyday things.   This internal Odyssey took me within my ‘self.’   My own awareness penetrated my physical body – then into various layers of my emotions and my mind.   This was a psychic trip.  I dived beyond the usual internal self-talk phenomenon, into silence.    And from silence came the answers I sought.   They continue to come.

     Like so many people, I’d already asked myself: ” What am I?” “Why am I here?”  “Do I have a specific purpose?”  No answers came; not at first.   Then, gradually, over the years, they did.  “You were born to make people happy.”   That was in 1987.   Then, much later:  “Life is about making friends, and becoming friends with old enemies, and acquiring the qualities which allow this.”

     Here is the first part of a message I received via automatic writing in February 2002.

Who Stole Your Happiness? by Dr. YKK and Arthur Thomas Ware

Preface 

“Who stole your happiness?   Who do you blame?   What’s that?   You don’t blame anyone…it just went.   Where did it go, then?   Where?

“What do you mean, where?”

“Where did your happiness go?”

“How would I know?”

“All right, let me ask you this then:  “Who stole your anger?”

“Nobody steals anger.   Who would want it?”

“Exactly:  Who would want it?   So why do we get it?”

“It’s…it just comes up.   It’s a sorta reaction.   Somebody does something and…”

“You lose your temper, right?   You lose your cool?

“Well, yes.”

“So where does anger come from?”

“I dunno.   It just happens.”

“It must come from somewhere.”

“Yeah, I suppose so.   Inside- it comes from inside.

“Really?    Whereabouts?”

“In our, er, brains.”

“So you’re saying that we have anger in our brains?”

“Where else could it be.”

“Good question.   I suspect that it’s all around us and in us.”

“That’s silly.”

“ Is it?   When we take a picture with a camera the things photographed and the light which brings it to the camera lens are outside of the camera, yet the photograph is recorded within.   It’s suddenly stored within on  the film, or now, in digital form.    We didn’t manufacture the scene outside, or the light waves that brought the scene to the camera.   They existed outside.  –   Ever heard of auras?

“You mean like haloes and such?”

“Yes.   There are clairvoyant people who can see all sorts of things outside of people, things within people’s auras.   A really competent clairvoyant can see emotions such as anger and jealousy, that sort of thing, in our auras.   Some of ‘em say they’re seeing it in our emotional bodies. “    They come up as various moving colours forever changing shape as we think.   Sorta like clouds around us.  Nowadays we can even take moving pictures of them.”

“You trying to tell me anger and jealousy could be outside of us?”

“Depends what you mean by us.?”

“Eh?”

“Do we start somewhere in the middle of our physical bodies and end at our skin?   Do we, as a person, end at the tips of the hair on our heads?”

“What are you getting at?”

“Give someone a cuddle and we can feel their body heat, right?    We can even be standing close but not touching them and still feel the heat radiating from them.   Are we feeling their body heat as something distinct from them?   Or are we feeling them?”

“No, mate, we’re feeling what they’re radiating.”

“But that heat comes into you.   You not only feel it on your skin, it warms you up, would you agree?

“Yes.   People have survived exposure in the wild by cuddling up to their dogs.”

“What’s doing the warming?”

“Don’t know what you mean.  Can you explain, please?

“Sure.    Body heat is heat-energy.   It’s energy.   It is vibrations, wavelets of energy- so is your physical body.   Yes, skin, fat, muscles, tendons, bones, all of it.  They’re energy, too.   Vibrations that radiate other energies.   Your could say they are gross energies.  But we have all sorts of subtle energies, such as those produced by our endocrine glands.   Then, of course, there’s our body-heat.”

“So?”

“So how do we really know where we start and end?  Do we really end at our skins?”

“You’ve lost me.”

“What I’m trying to tell you is that to say we are contained only within our skins is a commonly made arbitrary decision inculcated by our cultural conditioning.  We assume it this way.  That decision is based upon the way we perceive the universe, not how it is.    Each of us thinks of ourselves as separate because our senses tell us this is the case.   Also each of us thinks of ourselves as the centre of the universe.  We’re in here.   Everything else is out there.”

“And we are, if you ask me..”

“Yes, we are and we aren’t.   We appear to be contained in our bodies.   We believe our thinking only occurs within ourselves and no one else is affected by it unless we take a physical action.   We think it all stops, as I said, at our skin, all this emotional stuff, the thinking part of us.   We generate it.   It stays within us – unless we speak or move.  That’s our belief.  We appear to be contained in our physical bodies, but if we are, in what part?”

“What part?   Stupid question…in our brains.”

“But our brains are just energy, vibrations, wavelets.   There is nothing constant about them except, maybe the patterns they’ve temporarily taken on; neural pathways, that sort of thing.  So where abouts are we?   Where, exactly?”

“You’ve lost me.”

“That I can understand.  Because if you want to find out what you are, you’ll never find out with your brain.    Your brain is an organ of the body.”

“Yeah…then what about our minds?”

“Ah, now you’re getting somewhere.   But where do you think your mind is?”

“In your brain?”

“Some think so.”

“And you don’t?”

“No.  Certainly not entirely.   But let’s find out more, eh?   Let’s read some more of the book…”

In our last post on this blog, regarding our book, “Who Stole Your Happiness, and how you can reclaim your rightful ownership,” we presented the book’s preface.   We hope that what you read there prompted you to want to read further so…here is that ‘further.’   We present here the first part of the Introduction.    Enjoy the read.

                        Happiness is the meaning and the purpose of life,

A man had been searching for meaning in his life.   Years went by.  Frustrated, he changed jobs, careers, countries, searching, searching –  nothing seemed to satisfy him.   Then, at fifty years of age, immediately after attending an intense ten-day Vipassana Meditation course, meditating eleven hours a day in total silence, he undertook a *Rebirthing session.   Probably because the Rebirthing session followed only one day after the arduous ten days of isolation and silence, he was regressed right back until the time he was born.   This man experienced his beginning in his present life.   It was then that the answer to his search for meaning was revealed to him:

            He had been born to make people happy.

            I know this story to be true, for I, Arthur Thomas Ware, am this man.    More on this particular story will be revealed later.   But this book is not about me, but about you, the reader.  So let us get on…

            Happiness, ah, happiness…we all want it.  If you go into many of the search engines available today endeavoring to find a definition of the word, happiness, you’re liable to become quite frustrated –  unhappy even.   There are hundreds of references:  books, essays, historical treatises, ancient and modern philosophical discourses, poems, quotes  – everything, it seems, but a nice, terse definition one can get one’s ‘thinking gear’ around.   There are articles by learned professors, clergymen, statesmen and lay people.   Everyone but everyone seems to have an opinion about what  it is – but no one can actually define it.   What does become clear, however, is that although almost everyone is interested in happiness: very few seem to know much about it.   So if someone stole ours, how on earth are we going to get it back?

*Rebirthing:  commonly used term whereby a person is regressed back to the time they were born.     Wikepedia: Rebirthing-Breathwork – a form of alternative medicine consisting of a breathing technique.

The dictionary endeavors to explain the word happy as follows:  (of person or circumstance) to be “lucky, fortunate, contented with one’s lot.”   It doesn’t even bother to try to explain “happiness,” probably because the lexicographer who put the dictionary together found it just too hard.   This happiness thing seems to confuse everyone.

            You see, so many people feel they know what happiness is because, at one time or another, they remember having experienced it.    They know it exists.  What they find difficult to comprehend is how they came to experience it in the first place.   It seems to always be something that ‘once was,’ and perhaps maybe ‘found again.’    But how one finds it appears to be a mystery.    Was it really stolen from us?   Did we ever really have it?

            This book is specifically designed so that you might pause and ponder.   Pause and ponder what?   On how you can reclaim your ownership to what is rightfully yours – happiness.   You’ll notice that every title and subtitle asks you a question.   Do pause and ponder.   We cannot make you happy.  We can only help you to evoke responses already within you.   Those responses will more readily surface if you take your time…reflect…think back…allow the intuitive response.   The so-called, “ah-ha,” or “eureka” moment can only come out of silence.
